Dell Inspiron 7700 aio shuts randomly down windows 11

My Inspiron 7700, running Windows 11 Pro, randomly shuts down somettimes after 5 minutes, sometimes 2 hours. Using a different disk drive I installed Windows 10 Pro. So far I have had no problems.

Any signs of overheating?

Have you looked in Windows Event Viewer to see if any errors got logged around the time of the crash in Win 11?

Are you always using the same app when Win 11 crashes or is it random?

What version of BIOS is installed on this PC? BIOS 1.34.0 is the latest.  Are all the other latest drivers for Win 11 installed, including Intel Chipset and Intel Management Engine?

Since Win 10 seems to work, that might rule out a hardware issue, but you should run all the diagnostics from the F12 boot menu with the Win 11 disk installed.

Have you scanned the Win 11 disk for malware lately?

Possibly a corrupted installation of Win 11..?

@RoHe Thanks for the response.  This was bought at an estate sale. I used the OS already installed. After several crashes I downloaded a fresh copy using the Windows creation tool - and on a different computer. To no avail. I updated the drivers from the manufacturers websites; installed updates from Windows Security; I ran a complete diagnostics from the F12 boot. To no avail. I looked at the Event Viewer but there were so many crashes, and I am not really tech savvy, so i couldn't understand most of the Errors but there was no indication of overheating. I did update the BIOS but, since I don't use that drive now I don't know if it is the latest. I ran several malware scans - nothing. Before posting this i did some additional research and saw that there were other sites where posters said that perhaps there was a conflict with the Win 11 24H2 (latest) version and the Dell encryption. Several posters suggested trying 23H2 but it can no longer be downloaded from Microsoft and the 1 site I found that has it has  instructions for tech savvy people. Bottom line I was wondering if there were other suggestions . Thanks again.

BIOS is stored on a chip on the motherboard and is independent of what OS drive you're using, Win 11 or Win 10.  Click Start>Run>msinfo32.exe and click OK.  When it opens, click Summary at top left and scroll down right pane to see what version of BIOS is running.  If it's older than BIOS 1.34.0, it's time to update it.

Exactly what does: "I updated the drivers from the manufacturers websites" mean? Did you download them from Dell's site or somewhere else?  Drivers posted on Dell's site have been tested to be compatible with Dell PC model that lists them,. But, drivers posted on other sites may be different versions which have not been tested by Dell.  And when getting drivers from Dell's site, make sure you select the right OS before downloading anything.

If would be helpful if you give us some details about "Critical" errors listed in Event Viewer while running Win 11.  Ignore Kernel 41 errors because that's just a generic error meaning Windows wasn't shut down properly (because it crashed). Without knowing what type of issues you had with Win 11, it's hard to know how to help you fix things.

FWIW,  Win 11 24H2 is still very buggy and Microsoft hasn't fixed all its problems so far...

Thanks again. I'll get the BIOS I got the drivers from Dell. I'll try to get the errors from Event Viewer. Much appreciated.

OK Here goes. The Bios is 1.34.0 (02/04/2024). Now even Windows 10 is crashing. Here is a brief list of errors of which there have been well over 100 (many of the same) since I installed Windows 10 on Jan. 30.

Would have been helpful if you'd put a blank line in between the error listings....

Is Win 10 actually crashing and you have to reboot? Are you using Windows Defender or McAfee or something else?

Kernel-Power -  Like I said above, Kernel 41 errors are a generic meaning only that Windows wasn't shut done properly. It doesn't tell you why...

Windows.SecurityCenter.WscDataProtection - Run the Win 10 Windows Defender Troubleshooter.

COM Server: 10016 - You can safely ignore this one, according to Microsoft, and it a very common error

NtpClient - Just means that Windows couldn't connect with Microsoft's time server to sync the time setting on PC when you first booted up.  It tries again every 15 min until it make the connection. So ignore this one.

System Guard Runtime Monitor Broker - This service is no longer used by Windows Defender  in Win 10, except Microsoft forgot to disable the command in Win 10 that tries to load it. (They've disabled it in Win 11.)  So ignore this one too.

You can install Who Crashed (free) and it will help you identify an app or driver that's causing problems.

And try this:

  1. At desktop, open a CMD prompt window, Run as administrator
  2. At the prompt, type in: DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth and press Enter
Be sure to include a space in front of each / and note any error messages when that's done.
  3. Assuming no "fixed problems" in #2, at the CMD prompt, type in: sfc /scannow and press Enter.
Be sure to include a space in front of the / and note any errors when that's done.
  4. Assuming no "fixed problems" in #2 or #3, reboot PC and monitor performance.

Thanks again. Sorry for the lack of spaces but as I was cutting and pasting the errors it kept shutting down. Yes 10 crashes and I have to reboot.

RoHe I want to thank you again for your help and suggestions. Earlier today in a final effort, I reinstalled Windows 11, wiping out everything. I paused the updates until I installed drivers from the Dell support site. Then I installed the updates. So far the machine has  been running for close to 3 hours without a problem. I'll see what happens tomorrow. Is it possible that there was a conflict because of corrupt drivers?

You're welcome and glad to hear the good news.

Always possible there was a corrupted driver...

Hope that's the end of the problems.

@RoHe I spoke too soon. After much research, using WhoCrashed  - thank you - it seems that Dell SupportAssistant was part of the problem. I uninstalled it and the machine stays on, consistently, for several hours but then jusst reboots itself. Also, and probably unrelated, the power button doesn't work to turn it on. I have to unplug then plug it back in.

Sorry 'bout that, but at least you got rid of one troublemaker...

Does the power button blink when it won't turn on or is it just off...?

Open Windows Event Viewer and look for new critical errors or warnings around the time it crashes now. (Please, copy/paste them into Notepad so you can add blank lines in between.) Then copy/paste the text in here.

If you're using a power strip, surge protector or uninterruptable power supply, remove them and plug power adapter directly into working outlet.

Next time it crashes, unplug power adapter from PC and press/hold PC's power button for ~30 sec before reconnecting the adapter.  See if that stops problem from happening again.

Then boot up and tap F12. Select the Diagnostic option and run all of the tests. Will take some time so run them when you don't need to use PC for a while and be patient. Note any error messages reported when done.

How old is this PC and when was last time the motherboard was replaced, if ever? A weak/dead battery can cause all sorts of strange symptoms. Since this is an AIO, replacing the battery is like doing surgery.

Also always possible the power adapter is failing...

Any chance PC is still under warranty?

Thanks again for your patience and support. The power button shows no light at all, does not power off or on. The PC is used. I bought it at an "estate sale" so I doubt if the board has been changed. I know the warranty expired. Here is a sample of the Event Viewer results from 02/06 & 02/07 (blank spaces included 😊)

02/06

It seems this issue is related to the previous version of SupportAssist. Please install the latest version and let us know if you continue to experience this error.

If the issue persists, we recommend performing a clean installation by following the steps below:

Go to Control Panel, then Add or Remove Programs, and then Uninstall.
Afterwards, restart your computer (do not skip this step, it is essential to resolve the issue)
Reinstall Support Assist from this link > https://www.dell.com/pt-br/lp/dt/support-assist-for-pcs
Click Launch and test the new version.
If you encounter issues reinstalling SupportAssist, follow these steps:

Download the Microsoft Troubleshooter Tool, open the file, and click Next to run the tool.
Click Next, select Uninstalling, choose Dell SupportAssist from the list of programs, and click Next to uninstall.
If the uninstallation was successful, close the troubleshooter and restart the system (do not skip this step, it is essential to resolve the issue).
Ensure that the following five Windows services are removed from Windows Services when an uninstall is done and started when an upgrade or new install is performed.

02/07

The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Event 7009: The Dell Data Vault Processor service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

The Dell Data Vault Service API service depends on the Dell Data Vault Collector service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start

{15C20B67-12E7-4BB6-92BB-7AFF07997402}
to the user DESKTOP-QR6FMDJ\ROBERT SID (S-1-5-21-1402916807-2717092133-2758227617-1004) from address LocalHost (Using LRPC) running in the application container MicrosoftWindows.Client.WebExperience_525.1301.30.0_x64__cw5n1h2txyewy SID (Unavailable). You didn't say how you did the clean install of Win 11, but I'd create a bootable Win 11 USB stick using Microsoft's Media Creation Tool.  Run then installation from the USB and then use Windows Update to install all the latest updates.

When that's done, open Device Manager and look for devices marked with an X or ! - if any.  Those are the only devices whose drivers you should download/install from Dell's site. Use the Service Tag to find the right ones for this hardware. (Don't post Service Tag here.) If you see any "unknown" devices listed in Device Manager, right-click and Uninstall them.

I wouldn't install SupportAssist and DataVault again. You don't really need (or want) them and that should eliminate most of those errors.

2000-0415 is the error that needs attention.  It explains why the power button isn't working.  The power button cable may be disconnected from the button board or from the motherboard.  Carefully re-seat the power button cable on the button board and at #9 on the motherboard. See if that solves the problem.

Replace the motherboard CR2032 coin cell battery (#4) while you're in there, too.

If new battery and re-seating the button cable at both ends doesn't help, the button board may have failed and would have to be replaced.  A quick search says they're available at various sites for ~$12-$20, plus shipping. Or you can always contact Dell Spare Parts at 1-800-357-3355 (have Service Tag handy).

Thanks. I had installed the Win 11 using the Media Creation tool and USB stick and installed the updates using Windows Update. I used the Dell Site to identity the machine and then downloaded and installed the Critical, Recommended and Optional drivers. I've replaced the battery. I had checked the Device Manager; there are no Xs. It seems that this now comes down to the power button board. Is it located between the screen and the plate attaching the board to the frame? In other words, do I have to remove everything to see the back of the screen?

Update: I located the board and reseated the button cable at both ends. Now the button works but I still have the problem of random rebooting. I think I'll put the project aside for a while. The frustration is getting the better of me. Thanks again for your help.
