I want to upgrade my CPU in my Inspiron 5680 i7-8700 @ 3.20GHz 6 cores to an i9 CPU. I need some tech support on the right CPU. Has anyone done this and is it worth it? Motherboard is a Coffee Lake. HELP!!!

i9-9900 is validated in 5680.  It has been done (see user benchmark).  this means you can also use i9-9900k if you have a good cooler for it.

for gaming it depends on your gpu and the resolution you play at.

for example, if you have 3060 Ti, seems improvement is very slight.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
Benchmark CPU  Intel Core i7-8700 @ 3.20GHz ($454.49)

Benchmark Quality Settings  Ultra Quality Settings
Average 1080p Performance 139.5 FPS

Average 1440p Performance 105.8 FPS

(Ultrawide) Average 1440p Performance 91.1 FPS

Average 4K Performance 64.4 FPS

vs

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti
Benchmark CPU  Intel Core i9-9900 @ 3.10GHz ($439.99)

Benchmark Quality Settings  Ultra Quality Settings
Average 1080p Performance 147.8 FPS

Average 1440p Performance 112.1 FPS

(Ultrawide) Average 1440p Performance 96.5 FPS

Average 4K Performance 68.3 FPS

The i9 sounds good in name, but practically if you want better gaming performance invest in a faster video card which is almost always the crux.

@Bernard361 A couple of warnings if you try to do this:

First, the Setup and Specifications do not mention supporting any i9 CPU.

Second, in this thread, an attempt was made to upgrade the CPU to a K version. Seems like a very simple upgrade, yet it turns out there are different motherboard versions and some apparently do not support the change even though the PC  specifications indicate it should work.

You should make sure you can get a refund if the CPU does not work. Also, based on the posted benchmarks, it does not appear to be worth the expense.

What would you recommend for a gaming PC on or around a 2500 cap? I have an Asus TUF monitor vg259@165 Hz
