Controller error on disk

I have recently seen a recurrent error I'm unable to diagnose. "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk2\DR2." I have a Samsung 980 evo installed, but using CHDSK and Samsung Magician, neither reports a problem with the SSD. The SSD resides on Disk 0. Computer management does not show a Harddisk2 or DR2 (and I have also seen DR4 with the same message.) There are no external USB storage devices attached. The error occurs randomly through the day. I'm assuming this is some kind of virtual device but I don't understand the error.

Hi

The internet reports...

A Windows system error indicating a communication or hardware problem with the drive identified as Harddisk2 (which could be an internal, external, or RAID disk)

. Common causes include:

  • Failing or defective disk (especially in RAID setups, where the RAID controller may not detect a problem until total failure)

Faulty or loose cables connecting the drive

Issues with the disk controller or motherboard

Problems with external drives, such as USB HDDs going to sleep and not responding quickly enough

What to do:

Back up your important data immediately, as the disk may be close to failure

Check and, if needed, replace cables connecting the drive

Run hardware diagnostics (on Dell systems, tap F12 at boot for diagnostics)

Update your BIOS and disk drivers

If the drive is external, try a different USB port or cable

Run CHKDSK to check for disk errors, but only after backing up data, as this can stress a failing disk

If the error persists after these steps, the drive may need to be replaced

I think it is likely a Main Board issue, but I could be wrong.
