The drive will take standard CDs -- or is the drive physically broken (it's fairly old)?

@ejn63​ The disc will not go down in the player. It sits on top. Its like the center holes on the CDs are not big enough. It is a brand new computer and player.

The center of the cd player has a round circle with some sort of 'wing things' sticking out that the cd will not go past.

Usually the center snaps in place over the retaining (ball bearings or clips, usually).

What model system is this?
