Adding a second monitor to a Dell Inspiron 5675 with an AMD RX570

Kicking myself a little I couldn't figure this out, but I have never really used display port before. I have a Dell Inspiron 5675 with an AMD RX570 graphics card. I am trying to set up a second monitor. I have a monitor connected to the lone HDMI port on the 570, and can't really find a manual or a breakdown of the other ports on the Dell 570 card. Other 570's have a DVI and three 1.4 display ports, I only see three 1.4 display ports on the Dell 570 (in addition to the one HDMI).

The monitor I have, a Dell P2412Hb, has VGA and DVI video inputs. I have a billion extra cables, but I'm not sure if any of them are a display port to VGA or display port to DVI. Can I just grab a random one off Amazon, or are there any limitations on the Dell 570 I am not aware of?

Thanks.

A DP++ port automatically senses whether a DP or HDMI or DVI monitor is connected and does the signal conversion automatically inside the PC, so all you'd need is a "passive" cable that just changes the connector ends.  You'd have to look at your video card to see if any of its DP are marked with two plus signs next to a P inside a

Read here for more details about passive vs active connectors.

I guess you could try one of those cables, as long as you can return it...

Doubtful any of your billions of spare cables are DP(PC)>DVI(Monitor). You don't want to use the monitor's VGA port, which is a low quality analog port.

Dell OEM video cards typically don't have the same number or types of output ports as "retail" versions a card with the same model number. So you can't compare to non-Dell cards.

Video adapter cables typically only work in one direction, so confirm the adapter you linked is DP(PC)>DVI(Monitor).  You can't just turn an adapter end-for-end and expect it to work.

And there are at least 6 different versions of DVI connectors, so make sure this adapter is suitable for your monitor's DVI port too.

Easily connect your DisplayPort computer to a DVI display

The DP to DVI adapter lets you connect your DisplayPort laptop or desktop computer to a DVI display. The adapter supports plug-and-play connectivity ensuring a hassle-free setup.

Looks like your monitor is DVI-D Dual Link.  So confirm that adapter is the same on the monitor end.

So I need:

-From: DisplayPort Male (PC,Laptop, Graphics card) .

-To: DVI (DVI-D) Male (Monitor, TV, Project, etc).

I'm looking at the monitor manual and can't figure out any other specifications I should check.

Not so sure about that 2nd adapter you linked...

Their description says:

"...DVI-D single link 24+1 pin..." but the image shows a dual link connector.
You have to you mouse over 2nd image from top on left side, to see that it has a dual-link connector, but it's wired single-link inside. Don't if being wired single link will work with your specific monitor.

Single link also means it won't support certain higher resolutions. You want a cable to support the monitor's "native" (aka: "recommended" or "optimum") resolution, whatever that is.

BTW: Does your first monitor have DP or only HDMI?  If it has DP, you might consider connecting that monitor DP>DP and getting an HDMI(PC)>DVI-D(monitor) cable for the 2nd one, which would give you more cable choices.

I think this cable might work. DVD-D male to Display Port male. It's one directional, but it seems to fit the DVD-D on the monitor to display port on the computer. I realize the first cable I posted had the wrong dvi adapter and was going in the wrong direction.

Thanks. First monitor is a Dell SE2717H, it has only HDMI and VGA.

I'm looking at DVI-D dual link male to display port male, and see only adapters and no cables.

Found this, but mousing over the image and it looks like DVD-I dual link not DVD-D dual link. I'll keep looking. Thanks for the help. Never used DVI or DisplayPort before.

I found this cable which looks like it is compatible from the thumbnail, but it has this description for the displayport

Note: This DisplayPort adapter cable operates passively and is designed for use with dual mode graphics cards often designated with “D++”. Although the vast majority of source devices with DisplayPort are dual mode, it is recommended that you consult with your computer or graphics card manufacture to verify compatibility with passive adapters.

RoHe, Thanks for helping me out with this. I think some of the info you posted could help other Dell users as well.
