Understanding the First Article (FA) Process for Dell Configuration Services
When deploying custom images with Dell, many customers want to ensure their image works as expected on the hardware they plan to order. This is where the First Article (FA) process comes in—a critical step that allows for image validation before mass deployment.
Why Test Before Uploading?
Some customers prefer to test their image on the exact hardware configuration they intend to purchase prior to uploading the image for factory engineering. This helps catch compatibility issues early—especially with line-of-business applications that might interfere with:
- Peripherals
 - Firmware
 - Drivers
 - BIOS settings

Others may choose to test on existing on-hand hardware, which can be quicker and still validate basic functionality, though it may not reveal all potential issues.
What Happens After Uploading?
Once an image is uploaded to Dell, and completed the engineering process, the customer must approve a First Article. This is a sample unit configured with the uploaded image and the intended hardware specs. It serves as a final check before releasing the image for production orders.
Two Types of First Articles
Dell offers two options for FA review:
- Online First Article (Online FA)

- The customer remotely accesses the unit using a secure KVM (keyboard-video-mouse) session.
 - They can power it on and interact with the image to verify functionality.
 - Important: The unit does not have public internet access. This is a controlled environment designed strictly for image validation.

- Physical First Article (Physical FA)

- Dell ships a physical unit to the customer.
 - Ideal for customers who prefer hands-on testing or need to validate peripherals and physical setup.
 - Important: Physical first article testing is required for SCCM and MDT images.

Final Approval
Once the customer reviews and approves the FA, Dell proceeds with fulfilling the production orders using the validated image. This step ensures consistency, confidence, and quality assurance in the deployment process.
