Restore an Image Assist image into a Virtual Machine

Create an ISO of the DIA USB Drive

  1. Login to TechDirect to download Image Assist
  2. Unzip DIA, then modify the ImageAssist.exe.Config file by changing the false value to true for the following line:   <add key="SkipApplicationLaunchValidations" value="True" />
  3. Launch ImageAssist.exe, accept the EULA, select Image Assist Dynamic, click NEXT.
  4. Click the⚙️settings icon then click Additional Tools then OK.
  5. In the Create USB Drive or ISO File card, click CREATE. The Create USB Drive or ISO file page is displayed.
  6. For Boot Type select Bootable ISO
  7. By default, the ISO is saved in the C:\ drive. To change the path, click BROWSE and select a folder.
  8. Click CREATE ISO

To boot the VM to the ISO, mount the ISO as the CD-ROM > Go to the Settings of the VM, point your DVD Drive to the Dell_Restore_ISO.iso. For Hyper-V, you'll need to make it your first boot device and hold down a key on your keyboard in order to boot to it. For VMWare you can use the "Power on to Firmware" option and boot to the CDROM.

Once booted, use the RESTORE tool to apply the WIM to your VM's hard drive.
