Issues restoring 64-bit images

We have recently seen some instances where 64-bit images will not boot after the restore process is complete; resulting in either a BSOD or a blank screen on some Dell models.  If you experience this behavior, please try the following method to resolve the problems.

Create a 64-bit USB drive.  Once ImageAssist is installed, run this command:

Please note, this drive will be formatted FAT32 and will have a file size limitation of 4GB on it.  If you intend to host your image on this same drive, you will need to split your WIM into SWM’s less than 4GB.

Use this new USB drive to boot and perform the restore.

UPDATED 12/14/2015 - Please note the /secureboot switch for USB_Drive_Creator.exe has been depreciated in the latest 5.0.1.1 release of ImageAssist.  The USB creator tool will now auto-create the drive based off the OS architecture it’s run from.  e.g. if 32-bit, it will create a 32-bit PE.  if 64-bit, it will create 64-bit PE.

Tyler,

Thanks for the instructions, this worked for me and I can now restore my 64bit Win7 image to my 64bit E7x50 laptops.

Could you please briefly explain why this occurs? For example:

  1. Why is it no longer possible to create the USB drive in the latest IA version from a machine running Windows 7 pro 64bit?
  2. Why is it now required for USB drives to be created from WIndows 8 of all things?
  3. WIll the next version require USB drives be created from Windows 10 only?
  4. Will creation from Windows 7 be added back? Is this even possible?

Thanks again for your help, I'm up and running again.

Ben,

Thanks for the great questions. Please see my answers below.

1) With the Phase4 release you WILL be able to create 64BIT PE's with the Secureboot switch on Win7 64 machines. The release this wasn't working was due to a problem with the Win7 un-compression method used in Windows 7 machines. Windows 8 images do not have this problem, and going forward we have changed the method we are using to compress files into the ZIPs that are used by the toolset.

2) This just ties back into the above compression issue with the ZIP file included in the Phase3 release.

3) No it will not. This issue was only an un-compression issue that we have verified is no longer an issue and is included going forward as part of our testing release process.

4) With the upcoming Phase4 release it will re-included back into the process.

All of the issues were Win7 un-compression related and the method Tyler suggested was the work around we had to address that concern, but we have addressed that now and for future releases. So starting back with the Phase4 release you will be able to use which ever OS we support to create your USB Key with.

Thanks,

Ben, Gary -

The new release 4 has been published.  I've removed the W8.1 prerequisite from the instructions.

Thx gents -
