Image capture using Oracle Virtual Box and image assist

I have created a windows 7 Pro 32bit build in Oracle Virtual box and have got to the point where image assist has ran and reboots into the PE environment but it gets stuck on "windows is loading files" Progress bar reaches the end but doesn't progress.

Any ideas? I haven't added any extra drivers.

Hi DaveRSK -

We support VMWare Workstation current and one revision back.  This may be that the auto-capture process is not functioning in VirtualBox.  I'm not familiar with VirtualBox boot support, but if it can boot from a physical USB device - try running the process without "auto-capture" selected.  (You'll want to create the DIA USB drive if you haven't already) If you don't select the "auto-capture" option, the tool will Sysprep the system using the settings you specify in the unattend.xml creator and then it will shutdown.  (take a snapshot of your VM state in the shutdown state here.  Just in case you miss the boot option to boot to USB.  If you do miss that, and it starts booting to the HDD, setup will start running and you'll need to start over.)  From there, boot up to the DIA USB drive and manually run the capture tool.   If VirutalBox doesn't support booting from a USB drive, ImageAssist provides an option to create an ISO image of USB drive for VM booting.  To create the ISO, run the following:

"c:\Program Files\Dell\ImageAssist\USB_Drive_Creator.exe" /iso

It has been a year since the post. I was wondering if Dell now provides support Oracle VirtualBox.

here is the URL to the site of VM that we suggest to use while using Dell Image Assist. we do not support the applications but do suggest to use the VM which makes it easier for going back to a pin point in the image creation if something becomes corrupt or you forget to add an application.

Hi There,

I have bene able to create my image using Oracle VirtualBox v5.1.22 without an issue. From the Windows GUI I have been able to run Image Assist as expected to the point of completing everything accept the image capture. It "pretends" that the task is running;( I mapped a folder to an external 3.0USB drive to make sure) the HDD light blinks as if something is writing to it the "spinner" that is circling the DELL logo is spinning and yet after 1 hour of running the file size remains at 0kb and the percentage complete also remains at 0%. Any suggestions to get the image of out of the VirtualBox would be appreciated. Almost forgot - I can run Image assist from the windows GUI and it reboots to the capture process and I can also boot from a physical USB jump drive and weather I try to write the image to the mapped USB drive folder or if it writes it to the local Virtual HDD. It remains the same 0%.

Thanks

Hello,

The WIM created through ImageAssist should reside on the root of "C:\" of that VM session.  It will need to copied manually to an external drive or moved to a share then copied to an external drive.  The name of the WIM is "Dell_Captured_Imaged.wim.
