DIA Bug Reported - Profile Copier hangs during first logon with GPO - ImageAssist v. ≤ 10.0.1.6
Bug Reported - Profile Copier hang during first logon ImageAssist v. ≤ 10.0.1.6
What does it look like? When a user logs on, this will occur indefinitely.
- Root cause: Desktop icon settings & special taskbar icons require access to the registry to apply the setting changes. If the User Setting GPO “Prevent access to registry editing tools” is applied, the tool will fail the registry check & hang-up.
- The conflicting file is located at %SystemDrive%\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\settingsretainer.exe
This issue can occur due to the following GPO being applied; either domain based OR local GPO.
- Domain GPO Example
- Local GPO Example
Workarounds
- Do not use the copy profile feature in conjunction with the specified GPO.
- Change the GPO setting back to “not configured”, force reboot the system, log in & allow the profile copier complete.
- Remove the settingsretainer.exe from the image.
Resolved in 10.0.2.8 released 10/22/2020

Thank you for posting this, I just dispatched a new image template and was running into this issue that required me to remove settingsretainer.exe prior to running a gpupdate /force on freshly domained computers.
