5510 Windows 7 problems

Hello,

I've been working with some images I built. After some trial and error I built some stable and rather cooperative images. I went to apply it to a precision 5510 and I can't get it to boot.

Is there something unique with the 5510? I've always had issues with the lower end precision mobiles, but I figured this one would be different for some reason. The new process has been rock solid, even on the problem children from the past (xps13 variants).

Trepidation,

The precision 5510 has an optional NVMe drive (non-volatile memory express). Windows 7 does not support that technology by default. When you are capturing your image you will need to install a Microsoft hotfix (KB 2990941) which can be found here: http://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2990941

You will also want to make sure that your windows 7 image is built using GPT and not MBR. This will allow you to enable UEFI BIOS for windows 7 though you will be required to keep Legacy option ROMS enabled. Secure boot and windows 7 do not mix!

If your image is already in GPT format you can use DISM to load the hotfix in without having to recapture. If you are unsure how to do that a quick google search of "load updates into offline image using dism" should get you what you need.

As a side note: If you are new to using UEFI, you will want to create your image assist thumbdrives using UEFI as well. That means two things: 1) formatting them using FAT32 and 2) Probably needing to split your Wim files so that you can put them on your thumbdrive. My image is just under 9gb and it is in 3 sections.

I hope this is helpful!

I am having issues as well. Trying to PXE boot to grab a SCCM OSD task sequence to image.  I am using a Dell USB3 PXE dongle.  It hangs on PXE starting - sometimes it will grab and address but then midstream of contacting the SCCM site server it will drop it's address.  We have uplugged and plugged the dongle back in and the address is given again but it had already failed the task sequence.  I have no problems with the same dongle imaging an xps 13.  This is incredibly frustrating as I have purchased about 50x 5510 and can't get them to image off the network.  Any help would be greatly appreciated - I am going to log a support ticket as well - too much of an investment to not work correctly.

I should add that the reason you will want to enable UEFI on your USB sticks is so that you can take advantage of USB 3.0 when imaging. If you are using MBR/NTFS partitioning you can only use USB 2.0 when imaging...that becomes an issue when many of the newer devices only have USB 3.0 slots and many of us only have USB 3.0 drives.

Watersan - thank you for the response.  There is a lot of helpful information that has been consolidated at the following URL:
