Symm 8430 management

I have an old Symmetrix 8430 (microcode 5567) managed with symcli 4.3 and volume logix. I have some issues to manage dev allocation to hosts. For example I need to unmap some devs from their current ports so I can change the luns assigned to them, the problem is that I can't find the way to write disable the devices so I can unmap them (not by using symcli at least).

Finally I was able to do it using the Control Center 4.3, but it was difficult to access it because there's very poor documentation on Powerlink about it, or at least I didn't find any.

Is there a way to write disable devs with symcli 4.3? since the symdev -sid xxxx write_disable xxxx option is not available in this release.

Thank you.

I guess you can upgrade to a recent S.E. ... I'll have a look and give you a better answer later.

I hope I could! but this is that kind of very-old-non-upgradable platform with a ver important and critical application for the customer running on it (I will never understand why a customer can have such an important application running on a system that it's not even supported, but.....)

So, any old dusty documentation around? :)

Well... it's a bit of a catch 22 for EMC and the customers.

We addressed a similar question in this posting:
http://forums.emc.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=115789&tstart=0

If you're not able to see it on Powerlink, then it's not available for distribution, generally. The oldest I can see available is 5.1. As much as I'm loathe to type it, I have to agree that a more current version might be needed.

We have asked the client for a SE upgrade, and the answer again was no. The problem is that the servers sd.conf doesn't have the luns provided (or any other free lun in the array ports) so the host can't recognize the new devices. This is why we needed to change the luns to the ones available in the sd.conf. The second problem is that the array has no more free space to assign a different device to the host so we could provide them with the necesary space while we manage to unmap the other devices later.

As I said before, we already manage to do this by using the old Control Center 4.3, but still the question is in my head, is there a way to change the state of the devices so I can unmap them by symcli? I suppose that the answer is yes, but how? (this is now a question for cultural purposes :))

I need an EMC veteran! or a documentation collectionist!

can you zone another system running newer version of SE to this array and do your symcli work from there ?

it possibly could be done from "Inlines" (using commands from the array laptop) your local CE may be able to help you out (if the array is still supported) and the CE will need written permission from the customer to put devices into WD state. possible workaround?

Probably... but as I said before, now it's not a matter of how to unmap those devices using any kind of resources, but by using that specific version of symcli. It has to be a way to do it.

Not possible. The array is no longer in support from EMC. :-(

If you send me an email - sam.claret@emc.com I can supply you with 4.3 manuals and 2.3 volume logix manuals

Please note that if you have any issues with those versions of software then you are basically on your own

Thankyou
