Dynamic SRDF to migrate host

Hi,

I need to migrate a W2K host in a "lab" environment. I could use host based utilities to do this, but I would like to configure and use dynamic rdf as a learning experience.

The test host is connected to a DMX-3 and I need to move it to a DMX-1000. Both are in the same data center. I have plenty of ports on both symm's. The SRDF SYMCLI document makes it sound like all I need to do is:

configure dynamic_rdf on both symms (symmconfigure)
zone the FA's together
use "symrdf addgrp" to create the new group.
Add devices to the group

Can this be done or am I wasting my time?

Thanks,
Chatch

Unfortunately it's not as simple as that.
You will need to convert your FA ports to RA ports. That involves a bin file change that that only the EMC CE's can do. You also have to make sure that the microcode is compatable on both DMX units. I'm not sure if the DMX1000 on the R2 side from a DMX3 is supported. There are all kinds of crazy things that happen when you go from a Sym 6 (DMX1000, 2000, and 3000 etc) to R2s on the DMX3 with SRDF. This is because there is an architectural mismatch internally. The DMX3 is 64k blocks instead of 32k. Although EMC claims this works fine, it still gernerated thousands of error messages on the hosts.

Your best bet is to get EMC to help you.

I took a look at the SYMCLI document you mention and it's really misleading. It doesn't describe everything you need to do to get setup to start very clearly. There is a ton of prep work, you should EMC to look at your specific environmtent. It exceeds the scope of what a forum like this can provide.
