Confirm AIX hdisk changes on dynamic device conversion

We have a bunch of currently non-RDF enabled DRX devices on an AIX host which are going to become R1 enabled RDF devices in a few weeks.

My question is - does this mean that the hdisk definitions are going to have to be rebuilt? Currently a sample device shows as:

The new standard devices show up as:
hdisk197 Available 0F-08-02 EMC Symmetrix FCP Raid1

This host does use PowerPath so confident the VG setup will be fine as the PowerPath names should not change. I thought I had read a while back that this should not result in an outage, but I am unable to find anything in the Host Connectivity guide or on Powerlink to confirm this or not.

Unfortunately since the RDF link is not enabled yet there is no way for me to really test this out so we are hedging our bets and assuming the devices will change unless I can find otherwise.

Thanks.

I would recommend running an ODM cleanup procedure (emc93300) following the device conversion. This will force the host to rebuild its ODM DB and will pick up the new device descriptions for the newly converted devices.

Helpful - but this implies that it does indeed change all of the definitions since the procedure has you taking things offline to clear the ODM stuff.

The reason I suggested it was that if you did not perform an ODM cleanup and rebuild the ODM DB, the device descriptions and attributes would still be relating to "EMC Symmetrix FCP Raid1" and not the correct description and attributes of the newly converted devices.

I believe I have seen a Primus that describes, this I will do some research...

I've tried it in the lab a few months ago. There will be no outage, but upon reboot AIX will see different devices and create new hdisks. Since LVM is using PowerPath and PVID's, it should find the correct disks. However, to play it safe, I would not wait for a reboot, but schedule a short maintenance window to remove and rediscover the devices.
