AIX hdisk disk operation error - CLARiiON FCB LUNZ Disk
I have an AIX 5.2 host attached through the fiber fabric to both Symmetrix and CLARiiON. Host is running PowerPath.
The host administrator is reporting that they are receiving errors on hdisks that do not exist. They delete the hdisk devices but when they run cfgmgr they reappear. The output from "powermt display dev=all" does not show these devices in powerpath.
Here is some of the host error report etc.....
The following are the errors showing up in the error report
IDENTIFIER TIMESTAMP T C RESOURCE_NAME DESCRIPTION
B6267342 0219102908 P H hdisk47 DISK OPERATION ERROR
B6267342 0219102908 P H hdisk46 DISK OPERATION ERROR
B6267342 0219102908 P H hdisk3 DISK OPERATION ERROR

B6267342 0219102808 P H hdisk3 DISK OPERATION ERROR
B6267342 0219102808 P H hdisk2 DISK OPERATION ERROR
The following is an lsdev after cfgmgr is run

hdisk50 Available 03-08-02 EMC Symmetrix FCP RDF2 RaidS
hdisk51 Available 03-08-02 EMC Symmetrix FCP RDF2 RaidS
Not being an AIX person myself can anyone give me some clues as to what may be going on? The host admin has also told me these are not part of any volume group.

LUNz is a logical 'dummy' LUN that performs two tasks, firstly we know that there is connection between the host and array, you will notice a LUNz device for every path between the host and array (In your case 4 paths) The second function of LUNz is to pass instructions between the array and host. Once a standard LUN is added to the SG, LUNz's are no longer required as the array will communicate through the standard LUN.
In the SG on the CLARiiON, can you please add one LUN into it. Once the SG has a LUN in it, the array will use that LUN to communicate with the host, thus no need for LUNz. Now when the SA's remove the LUNz's they will not re-appear!
Also, using NaviManager, please ensure you have the following parameters setup correctly:
Initiator Type: 3 (CLARiiON Open)
Arraycommpath: 1
Failover mode: 1

Right click on the array, select Connectivity status, find your host and select "Info"

Initiator Type: CLARiiON Open
Array CommPath: Enabled
Failover Mode: 1
I'll have the SA try deletes again and see what kind of results we get.
