Simplified Storage Optimization Techniques
It is easy for IT managers to become lost in the details of the numerous tools and articles regarding Storage Optimization. Knowledge Sharing authors Janarthanan Palanichamy and Akilesh Nagarajan feel what IT managers really need to know is the various simplified techniques to perform virtual workload modeling and device modeling to derive maximum benefits.
In their article, Janarthanan and Akilesh leverage years of experience as engineers working with Symmetrix to explore some of those techniques to optimize Storage performance in VMware-Symmetrix environments. The article explains simple techniques to:
• Collect Performance metrics using native tools (FAST/SIOC) and provide insights for making decisions to have a balanced environment.
• Reduce I/O latencies between hosts and the storage arrays.
• Identify I/O contention issues and ways to address them.
• Make I/O load balancing decisions based on EMC FAST information.
• Perform predictive VMware Storage DRS to prevent I/O boot storm situation.
Though this article focuses on Storage Optimization techniques for VMware-Symmetrix environments, it can be easily adapted to other environments having different virtualization software and arrays as well.
