Physical To Virtual: A Reclamation Story

Declining budgets present significant challenges to IT organizations. Budget constraints accentuate the drive for efficiency in all facets of IT through leveraging of technologies that allow administrators to consolidate more, create denser computing solutions, and smultaneously maintain or reduce head count.

One of the most difficult tasks for any operations team is reusing what has already been deployed. While the motivation at the application level is to deploy and maintain, there is little process around cleanup and reuse of assets that have yet to reach end of life.

In this Knowledge Sharing article, author Aaron Baldie focuses on how to reclaim physical capacity when migrating from traditional LUNs to virtually provisioned storage in a Microsoft Windows environment. The article lays out a best practice of how one IT discipline—storage administration—can optimize the reclamation of storage volumes down to the smallest extent possible. Using the tools and processes that Aaron prescribes, IT departments can extend the life of the storage infrastructure and enable better utilization from host to storage, while meeting the demands of the business to do more with less.
