About John

John is the Storage Architect at the largest privately-owned bank in the United States.  His IT experience began while enlisted in the U.S. Air Force working as a Technical Controller and spans from Microsoft and Novell implementations, network design and configuration, to architecting and deploying enterprise-wide storage solutions.

John has participated in multiple Knowledge Sharing competitions, and wrote a winning article, "Taming the Data Tiger,"  in 2007.  The article is in the Proven Professional ONLY community, if you can't access the article click here for help.

John's Knowledge Sharing Article

John's 2010 Knowledge Sharing article, "SAN Performance - Getting the Most Bang for the Buck," outlines a  methodology that storage engineers and administrators can use to identify and remediate performance-related issues.

A solid methodology coupled with timely and accurate data is crucial to identify current and potential bottlenecks in the storage infrastructure.  You can also use this article to help combat the misperception that "all server and database-related performance issues are attributed to the SAN\Storage Subsystems." The Appendix is full of sample SAN monitoring documentation, performance metrics basics, host performance basics, and recommended best practices, making this knowledge sharing article a must-read for SAN administrators!
