Computer Science Helps Shield Earth From Asteroids

You may be surprised to learn that asteroid impacts are not rare. According to University of Manchester physicist Dr. Brian Cox, there is an “asteroid with our name on it” and it is only a matter of time before an asteroid large enough to wipe out the human race collides with Earth.”

If astronomers could predict meteoroid and asteroid strikes years in advance, Earth would conceivably have time to prepare for the disaster or possibly even prevent it. It all starts with finding the threats.

In this Knowledge Sharing article, Bruce Yellin covers the aspects of computer science fundamental to astronomy, allowing the reader insight to the leading edge approaches to asteroid detection and the actions that could one day lead to the survival of civilization itself.
