Building better Management Storage Reports for unified storage systems
Unified storage systems are used as core infrastructure for many corporate services such as server virtualization environments, database environments (ERP, CRM, etc.), email systems, and file systems. This leads to the necessity of sending reports to management regarding storage system status.
In this award-winning Knowledge Sharing article, Moshe Karabelnik presents a step-by-step creation of a comprehensive management storage report using native tools available to the storage administrator.
The article starts with decisions the storage manager should make;
• which values should be presented in the report
• allocated storage or used storage
• pool or file system capacity
• LUNs allocated capacity
• actual used capacity inside LUNs
Once determined, Moshe describes a method to actually collect that data from the storage systems which will be used to create the report. A sample report is provided as well.
This article will interest any storage manager that would like to enhance storage system visibility to their management. While the article focuses on VNX® and VNXe® systems for data collection, storage managers could easily adopt the mechanism to support different storage systems.
