Server 2008 x86 w/ MD3000 attached upgrade to 2008 R2

I have a Dell PER710 running Server 2008 Enterprise x86 with a MD3000 attached that is split into two virtual disk (10tb and 2.7tb). I am going to upgrade the OS to Server 2008 R2 which means a clean install. Before I do anything I am going to take an image of the server and a back up of the contents of the MD3000 just incase anything goes south. What I am curious about is, what is best practive as far as upgrading the OS? Should I de-attach the MD3000, do the installation then reattach the MD3000 after the OS is installed? Or should I just stop over thinking it, and just do a clean install of the OS with the MD3000 attached and nothing will happen to it?

Any help or advice would be greatly apprecated.
