SAN Reconfigure help
I have a Dell MD3000 SAN Power Vault. Its split in to 3 Luns all used by 3 Hyper-V servers. Each Lun between 1.5 and 2TB and are mostly unused. I’d like to create a 4th (Possibly 5th) Lun for a Xenserver area. I’ve never reconfigured or configured a SAN before so im looking for some documentation or advise on how this is done and the downtime involved.
As a side question, I have read a few articles about Hyper-V and Zenserver in regards to failover when a Host server goes down.
Hyper-V has a live migrate ability but im curious what is needed on the backend with the SAN to make this work.
Zenserver has “High availability” feature that is quite intriguing. Though I’m not seeing much info on the backend for these two servers as to the nature of the SAN and how its setup to allow these features.
I know Dell has little to do with Zen or Hyper-V but the questions I have are pertaining to the storage of these two so this is why I come here to ask my question. If this should be directed elsewhere please let me know.

As far as failover goes? Generally as long as the storage is available to all hosts in a given cluster it just works. My main experience is with Vmware though.
To add a host? You generally put in the iSCSI IP addresses of the san in the host dynamic discovery and then the host shows up on the san to add it. Then viola!! The storage mapped to the host group show up on the hosts in that group.
I hope this helped some.

For now I believe I have the basic connection of the iSCSI understood. My concern now is how to reconfigure the stores or LUNs on the SAN. I have run out of free (unused space on the SAN). I will have to make each of the existing LUNs smaller to accommodate 1 or 2 new LUN's. Id like to know what impact it would have to the machines (VM's) that are within the existing LUNs.
Do the machines need to be turned off?
Can I change the size of the LUNs and keep the existing data intact?
How long should the take?
Thx V
ect..
