PowerEdge R710 RAID Configuration Issues

Are there any known issues with trying to create multiple virtual disks on a Poweredge R710 w/ 4 hard drives and a SAS 6/iR Integrated controller (v 00.25.47.00.06.22.03.00)?

I can get one (1) virtual drive to show up by going through the following steps in the Unified Server Configurator:

1. Hardware Configuration -> Configuration Wizards -> RAID Configuration, current configuration shows "No Virtual disks found on the controller". Click Next.

2. Select the RAID controller that you want to configure: SAS 6/iR Integrated

3. RAID Level : 1

4. Check only "Physical Disk 0:0:0" and "Physical Disk 0:0:1", click Next.

5. Do NOT "Assign a Hot Spare Disk...", click Next.

6. Selected Physical Disks show "Physical Disk 0:0:0" and "Physical Disk 0:0:1", click Finish. RAID Configuration successful.

7. Return to RAID Configuration, current configuration now shows "Virtual Disk 0 / RAID 1 / 232.30 GB.

However, I'll try to add a second virtual drive by going through the following steps:

1. Click Next. Select the RAID controller that you want to configure: SAS 6/iR Integrated

2. RAID Level : 1

3. Check only "Physical Disk 0:0:2" and "Physical Disk 0:0:3" (disks 0:0:0 and 0:0:1 are still checkable at this point ???), click Next.

4. Do NOT "Assign a Hot Spare Disk..." (can't check it anyway), click Next.

5. Selected Physical Disks show "Physical Disk 0:0:2" and "Physical Disk 0:0:3", click Finish.

6. Receive a message saying "You have an existing RAID configuration. If you change this configuration, data will be lost. Do you wish to continue?" Click Yes. RAID configuration successful.

7. Return to RAID Configuration, current configuration STILL shows "Virtual Disk 0 / RAID 1 / 232.30 GB.

Does this particular RAID controller (or firmware version) have a restriction on the number of virtual drives?

I need to know as well.   Getting ready to set my 6/iR controllers to 3 RAID 1's using 6 disks.   I am using ESX though.   It looks easy through the bios though.

JOHNADCO,

Yes, the BIOS option of CTRL+C to enter the SAS Configuration appears to be much more straightforward. I was able to create two RAID-1 configurations among my 4 drives. Maybe I'll see what path this takes me down. Have you tried this and run into problems?

I have always created them in bios.   Not very plug and play when you have to down the O/S indeed.  But the ESX Dell management stuff is really difficult to get working.  I gave up.

I got the same issue but now I can fix this problem.

First, I try to create to a group of Disk Array the same you have done above.

Second, after created one already, you have to reboot and then Ctr+R, you will see a virtual disk of group array that just created is synchronizing.

Third, you go to Controller 0 at the top and click enter key, you will see another available disk to create anther array.

Good luck,
