PERC 6i Booting from an external Esata drive
I have a T7500 with the PERC 6i to control my 4 RAID 10 internal SAS drives. I also backup weekly to a CMS 1TB with two internal SATA drives in a RAID 0 configuration. On my old Dell I could boot from the CMS external drive should I encounter a hardware issue or virus on my internal drives. Now for some reason I can't boot from this drive. After trying multiple times with a few Dell Pro Support people, I'm told that because my machine uses the PERC 6i it won't allow me to boot from an external drive. Does this sound right to anyone or has anyone else seen this issue?

Yes I have tried connecting it to the external ESATA port as well as directly to a ESATA M'bd port through a pass-thru I/O. I have also tried to hook it via USB with no success either.

Hello
How does this CMS device connect to the workstation? If it connects via USB then you should be able to change to boot order to boot from USB. I haven't verified that the T7500 supports USB boot.
The boot method shouldn't have anything to do with the PERC. It should be an issue of what boot devices the T7500 supports.
Thanks

Did you change any of the boot settings in the system BIOS to allow it to boot to the CMS? Check these BIOS settings and let me know what they are set to:
System Configuration>USB Controller
POST Behavior>Fast Boot
Drives>Drives Let me know if External SATA is checked
Drives>SAS Controller
General>Boot Sequence
Also, I want to some clarification. Your post makes it sound like communication to this device is working fine. I want to clarify if you are able to backup to the device via eSATA and USB. We need to be clear on whether this is a communication issue or just a bootable device issue.
Thanks

Regular communication to the CMS drive is fine thru the external ESATA I/O port.
I have tried enabling the CMS drive in the Bios both when connected thru the I/O and when connected directly on the Mbd sata connectors next to the optical drive. If I do a F12 and select the external esata as the boot drive it freezes up at that window. See below
