OpenManage Storage Management with the PERC H800 and MD1200

With the PERC H800 is it necessary to use the OpenManager Storage Management to configure the controller with an MD1200, or can I use just the BIOS Utility? I think I can use just the BIOS utility,  I'd be interested in the OM Storge Management, but I can't find much about it.  I'm told to reference the OpenManage Storage Manager User Guide, but I can't seem to find it when I search. Also, does this come  with the PERC H800 or do you have to download it?   TY.

Sam,

Thank you for taking the time to reply! So what is the OpenManage Storage Management software that the manual is referring to?

Thank you,

Hello Elle1,

Yes you can configure the MD1200 by using the PERC Bios of the H800. To monitor the MD1200 outside of the bios you need to use OMSA (Open Manage Server Administrator). Here is a link to download the software.

OMSA 32bit

OMSA 64bit

Hello Elle1,

That is an older tool that was used. The newer tool is OMSA. Also I am not sure which manual that you were looking at but for the MD1200 it also references server administrator if you look on page26 to manage the MD1200 or the controllers Bios. ftp://ftp.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_ser_stor_net/esuprt_powervault/powervault-md1200_Setup%20Guide_en-us.pdf

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello. I have OME setup on a server and have discovered the PowerEdge R410 that my MD1200 is attached to. The R410 is running Windows Server 2008 r2 64. OME shows the R410's C:, mapped drives, and I believe the storage controller of the MD1200, but not the individual hard drives on the MD1200. How do I get the MD1200 HDDs properly inventoried in OME

The server has Dell OpenManage Systems Management Software 64-bit version 8.2.0 installed.

Thanks,

Ben

I got this figured out and can see each individual HDD on my MD1200. I had previously, incorrectly discovered my R410 that the array was attached to. I did the following to fix this:

  • Setup SNMP community string properly on both Windows service and OME discovery job > then restart the service
  • Start the SNMP trap windows service while I was at it
  • Repair or re-instal the latest 8.2 agent
  • Delete original discovery entry of the server in OME and run discovery to get a fresh db entry
