Online firmware upgrade with IO of MD3600i
Hi,
is it possible to upgrade firmware on MD3600i from 07.80.62.60 to 07.84.47.60 online without server connection loss with dual controllers?
I'm asking because in upgrade instructions is this sentence "If you have a single controller PowerVault MD32/MD36 series storage array you must stop all I/O operations before starting the RAID controller firmware upgrade."
So I'm confused because always all from dell told me that before upgrade I had to shutdown all iscsi initiators accessing devices.
But I need this firmware asap because there is support for esxi 5.1 update 1
Thanks

Hello tibor.zoom,
The reason we state that all I/O needs to be stopped is so that you don’t get any data corruption when you do the firmware upgrade. When you do the firmware upgrade on the dual controllers it does the controllers one at a time but there is a chance that both controllers can go down & reboot at the same time & then you will run the risk of lost access to your data until one of the controllers comes back up. It is not best practice to run firmware with the MD has active connections to hosts, but if you want too you can attempt it but I would get a tested backup first just in case you need to do a restore. Once again if you can reduce the I/O it is best to have the best results for your firmware upgrade.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
