multiple xenserver storage-repositories in one equallogic pool?

i have two Xenserver pools, a 5.6SP2 cluster (its called a pool but i will say cluster so i don't mix terms) of 16 hosts and a 6.0 cluster of 4 hosts.

The 5.6SP2 cluster is configured w/a shared storage repository on our equallogic's "default" pool.

I want to add shared storage to the XS6.0 cluster, so I created a new shared storage repository in this cluster using the same equal logic "default" pool.

I saw the Management LUN get provisioned alongside the old Management LUN and the VBD LUNs from the old cluster. I provisioned a new VM on the new cluster but was unable to boot it (it was provisioned by xenserver without read access?). Some storage operations in the original 5.6SP2 cluster hanged, appeared to be blocked by storage operations on the new 6.0 cluster.

I wanted to ask before I go further... Is there any reason that putting many XenServer storage repositories on a single equal logic pool is a bad idea?

The default storage pool in your EqualLogic Group is just a logical storage space comprising of one or more members.  A array member can only be in one pool at a time, so If you have only one array member in the group it is added to the "default pool" by default (you have the option to use the default pool, or create a new pool and move the member to it).  An array member cannot be in more than one pool at a time.

Provided that each of the Xen Storage Repositories are in a separate “volume” on the array (one of the 5.x and one for the 6.x) then the limit of the number of SR’s is only constrained by the available space in the EQL Pool, the Max number of volumes support by the array group (currently you can have up to 1024 volumes per group or 512 if this is a PS 4xx0 array), and your SAN network configuration (for performance, etc.).   Just ensure that you keep 10% free space for array operations.

Also, make sure that the storage volumes on the array (one for the 5.x and 6.x SR’s) is enabled for shared access from multiple initiators. To enable shared access, in the PS series group manager user interface, right click on the volume and select “Modify Volume Settings.” Select the Advanced tab and check “Enable shared access to the iSCSI target from multiple initiators”.

Double check your network setup as well (i.e., the switches, setup and log files).  Also, were there any error messages in the group/server or switch event logs?

The Dell Storage team is proud to publish the following deployment and configuration guide:

Using Dell EqualLogic and Multipath I/O with Citrix XenServer 6.2

Retweet!  https://twitter.com/PachecoAtDell/status/405038752730345472

This document describes how to configure EqualLogic   storage, including MPIO, in Citrix XenServer version 6.2 environments using   the software iSCSI adapter.  XenServer 6.2 natively supports MPIO with a   single discovery address.  Dell and Citrix have collaborated to provide   EqualLogic MPIO capabilities from XenServer.
