MD1200 and Storage Spaces with Server 2012

I'd like to purchase an MD1200 and increase the capacity of the MD1200 as I need more space, and I'd like to do it through Storage Spaces in Server 2012.

Can the MD1200 be set up as JBOD so Windows Server 2012 can manage the disks and create storage pools, or...

... can I increase the capacity of the virtual drive on the MD1200 without wiping the current virtual drive and all the data on it?

Hello highdel,

You should be able to setup the MD1200 as a jbod & have 2012 mange it.  I would recommend that you back up your data first just in case there us any data corruption.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sam, luckily I'm trying to figure this out before I even have any data.

I was under the impression that the 800 PERC controller handles the physical drives and presents them to the OS as a single partition, but you're telling me you can set it up as JBOD and let 2012 view all the physical disks and create storage pools?

If so, how do you do this? Is there any documentation on the steps? I ask because two Dell resellers have told me that it's not possible.

Hi, you might find an answer to your question in the "Deploying Windows Server 2012 R2 Storage Spaces on Dell PowerVault" page.

Andrea
