Dell SC8000 Multipathing with ESX via UCS FI

Hi Guys,

i haven't used Dell Storage before but I have extensive knowledge about other storage platforms.

I have questions regarding the configuration we have on Dell SC8000 for multipathing ....

On Dell SC8000, two FC ports from both controllers  are directly connected to UCS FI A & B. So in all 4 controller FC ports are being used for front end connection. 2226x contoller has ports fc:07 & fc:08 to FI A & B respectively, Also controller 2226y fc ports fc:1d & fc:1e to FI A & B as well .

On UCS we have configured the storage connection policy where fc0 & fc1 will use two controller ports each from FI A ( fc:07/ fc:1d)  & FI B (fc:08/fc:1e) , which means the single server on UCS is zoned to four different FC ports on SC8000 from controller A & Controller B .

Now when i connect to SC8000 Storage GUI, I create a volume and map it to the above server  , while mapping, I can only map it to a certain controller either 2226x or 2226y , even though it shows me that the fc0 & fc1 can see all controller ports , but mapping is via only controller 2226x , via one fc:07 .

Now when we look at the multipathing on ESX level there is only one path active and no other paths active or even standby, which means one volume is present only via fc0 thru fc:08, another volumes is available via fc1 thru fc:1d...

The zoning is for all controllers to be used but mapping doesnt allow to use both controllers and hence, we end up using single path ...

Is this normal or am I missing something ?

When I reboot the controller , the volumes are being failed over to another controller, but when i fail an hba fc0 or shutdown a FI, the volume are not failed over to another controller, which means the failover level is only at controller level, not at the link, hba level..

I just need to have a volume assigned from SC8000, over all 4 FC controller ports, atleast have active/active or active/passive config for multipathing.

I hope i was able to explain my problem ...

Regards

RB
