Dell PERC 6e attached to MD1000 move to new server recommendations

Please advice and let me know if you need more information.  Thanks.

1. I am looking for the proper way to move a Dell PERC 6e card to a new server without loosing my data on my MD1000.  The 6e is installed on a PE 2950 which is attached to a MD1000.

2. Would it be eaiser to install a new PERC 6e on the new server with the same exact RAID configuration?

3. Is there going to be an issue between Windows 2003 Storage Server (current configuration) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (new configuration) as far as shares go?

Current Configuration:

PE 2950 -  Windows 2003 Storage  - Server is going to be out of warranty and no support available from Dell

c:\ - OS

d:\ - local drive

e:\ - local drive

f:\ - MD 1000 - RAID 5

g:\ - MD 1000 - RAID 5

h:\ - MD 1000 - RAID 5

New Configuration:

Dell 1 U (new server) - compatible with PERC 6e - need your recommnedation here

OS will be Windows Server 2008  R2

Hello mmantecon,

1. I am looking for the proper way to move a Dell PERC 6e card to a new server without loosing my data on my MD1000. The 6e is installed on a PE 2950 which is attached to a MD1000. As long as you have a server that is compatible with the PERC 6/e then you should be able to move the PERC card and MD1000 to the new server without any issues. Just make sure that you power on the MD1000 & wait about 5 minutes for it to come to a ready state then you can turn on the server and go into the PERC bios & confirm that all your virtual disk are still showing correctly. The raid configuration is stored on PERC6/e & on the drives themselves so you shouldn’t have any issue with moving, but as always it is best to backup your data before doing the move just in case something does happen.

2. Would it be eaiser to install a new PERC 6e on the new server with the same exact RAID configuration? You would only want to do this if the perc6/e has failed & needs to be replaced as then you will need to import the configuration from the MD1000 but that will take some time & can fail sometimes.

3. Is there going to be an issue between Windows 2003 Storage Server (current configuration) and Windows Server 2008 R2 (new configuration) as far as shares go? As long as the shares data is not specific to Windows 2003 then yes they will be seen by the Windows 2008. As far as which server here is a link to the list of servers that are compatible with the PERC6/e. http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/04/campaigns/dell-raid-controllers?c=us&l=en&s=bsd&cs=04&redirect=1 if you select the External Storage Tab& it list out all servers that will accept the PERC6/e.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thank you and thank you for the link to the servers that are compatible with PERC 6e controller.

Follow up questions:

1. All servers compatibel with the PERC 6e listed on the link are older and not available on the Dell website.  Do you know if any of the newer servers are compatible with the PERC 6e?

2. For the OS, most likely going to be a 64 bit.  Is there going to be an issue with the PERC 6e?

Thanks,

Mike

You can quite literally remove that PERC6 card and plug it into any computer.. even into a Dell home computer and it would function without issue.  A Dell server is required to use Open Manage if you need to reconfigure the unit.  The unit can also be reconfigured through its system BIOS.

There are no driver issues with x64.

Your RAID configuration lives on both the PERC card and the MD1000 controller itself.  Disconnect the card and place it into virtually any system, reconnect the MD1000 and power on the new system.  Install the drives for the PERC card and you are all set.
