Dell EqualLogic 6010 Initial Setup

Hi. I have a Dell EqualLogic 6010 collecting dust in my test lab. It was sent from another office for unknown reasons. I would like to utilize this device to offload some developmental vm backup copies from our san to this smaller 16 drive device.  I only have one switch that came with it, but for the intended use, this should be fine. I will only be connecting one physical server to it where my back up software resides. (I wish I could simply direct connect, but I've read this isn't possible, or at least not recommended) The problem here is...I don't know where to start.

I have searched for set up guides, configuration guides, and manuals, but the only pdf's I find are more about limitations, best practices, what it can do, etc., rather than beginning from step one. (like, the directions that include setting up the rails and all that stuff we usually skip...lol) Can anyone help with a quick set up guide or crash course? Perhaps point me in the direction of some documentation?

For example...do I serial in? If so, what are the default creds? Perhaps there's a default ip that I can connect my laptop to in order to begin initial set up? Or is there a config that I can run on the same subnet like EMC's VNX set up that will find unconfigured devices? I really can't find any of this set up info for this device. Hope someone can help.

Thanks much. :)

Thanks for taking the time to help Don. I had searched similar phrases in Google (had a few visited links in the search when I attempted yours) so I did see some of them, but I definitely could have missed one with the specific set up in it.

I was able to connect but grpadmin was unfortunately not the password. I tried some commands (I think it was setenv resetpassword 1) and it said it was temporarily changing the password, but then also said saying something about being connected to the secondary and it stopped progressing. I switched the serial cable to the other and I was never able to get back to that point...it would freeze, and no matter how many times I powered off/on, I could not connect on the designated com port again.

In hindsight, this unit might be slightly short of my space needs anyway. (600gb x 16) minus the overhead (raid parity, hot spare, etc.). It might make more sense to load up a spare R720 I have laying around with larger 900gb drives and I can gain slightly more space without the additional hardware.

Thanks for the information though. If I do decide to play around with it some more for something else, your info was a great start and I appreciate it!
