Auto-Snapshot Manager - No control volume detected

Hello,

we have a problem with Auto-Snapshot Manager/Microsoft Edition and VDS/VSS. When we try to start ASM/ME, the initial "Add snap-in to console" window appears for a very long time and then the following error message is shown: "iSCSI Target Portal Verification: Discovery Address: 10.22.1.100, Status: No control volume detected, Recommended Action: Use Group Manager GUI to verify group IP address and VDS/VSS access controls."

At the same time, the following four strange audit errors are written to EqualLogic syslog, with about 14 seconds between them:

The storage is a clean new setup of PS6010E and PS6010XV boxes, with the latest 5.1.2 firmware running on 10GE dedicated SAN based on PC8024 switches. All the hardware setup and SAN networking was made by Dell technicians.

We double-checked all SAN and mgmt IPs, iSCSI networking, CHAP, VDS/VSS access lists, firewalls etc. and everything seems to be ok. Firmware upgrade from 5.1.1 to 5.1.2 didn't help. This problem affects only ASM/VDS/VSS, ordinary iSCSI volumes and LUN traffic work fine. The issue is very likely on EqualLogics side and not on the Windows side because all Windows servers are affected. I also don't understand why the syslog says something about SNMP packets although afaik VDS/VSS control uses iSCSI protocol only.

Does anybody know what could be the cause of this problem or should we rather file a Dell support case?

Best regards.

This can happen for a few different reasons.  Depends if you are doing Smartcopy snapshots via ASM/ME or Smartcopy replicas via ASM/ME.  (more likely on the latter).  If it is during replication, make sure there is not NAT in the mix, and that there is a static route between the machine and the target location.  I had it happen to me after I moved my target replica from a test network to the real location.  A simple restart fixed the issue.

Was this working for you at one time, but no longer?  Or has it never worked for you?  I provide a lot of information on how I made it work at:  itforme.wordpress.com/.../replication-with-an-equallogic-san-part-5
