124t drive Comm error 6 and LSI raid card errors
Chasing my tail on some on going issues with 124t and an LSI Ultra 320 SCSI card. Dell #nu947
Originally we were having com error 6 on the 124t - we replaced the whole unit and still having the issue.
We also were seeing event viewer errors on the SCSI card in the server, so we replaced it as well. We swapped SCSI cables with one that was lying around.
Both these symptoms are re-occurring and we haven't been able to get a full backup in quite a while.
I am considering replacing at these components again, but not really sure what to do at this point.
No Events found!

Thanks Sam, we have a green light on the terminator, would it be possible it could still be bad?
I will get the on site tech to run the tests as you suggested.
And will update on our progress.
We were getting in the event logs that the SCSI "driver detected a controller error" on the LSI_SCSI. Are these likely related?

Hello Stonewall 40,
So with the 6E error is a communication error. Now since you stated that you have replaced the PV124T SCIS card & cable, by chance did you check your SCSI terminator to make sure that it is show as green as well. I have seen cases where a bad terminator will cause the same issue that you are experiencing. If the terminator is showing as green then I would disconnect the PV124T from the server and make sure that you can run the random moves test about 20 cycles with about 3 test tapes in the unit to see if you get the error message without any cables connected to it.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

the on site tech sent me these logs (above) from the 124t, not sure if they'd be of any assistance and thanks

Hello Stonewall 40,
Thanks for the loader.txt file as it can help tell what error that the PV124T is reporting. Just had a question as I looked at the logs & it looks like every few days that the 6E error is happening, are there any server reboots that are happening as well or only rebooting the server to see if the PV124T will regain connection? If there isn’t any server reboots that are happening then it could be an issue with the SCS connection in the PV124T from the back of the PV 124t to the tape drive in the system.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

As far as I know I don't think there was any server reboots. I shipped a new external cable and terminator to the site. Sounds like we need a new PV 124t then?
We checked the SCSI id's on on the 124t and it is now set to 5, moved from ID 6.
Because I really don't want to EVER try and open up on of these again! :) They weren't really designed with the service person in mind for ease of access and serviceability.
Thanks again Sam for the help. At this point is there aany reason to suspect the Raid card in the server? Or perhaps any firmware issues?

Hello Stonewall 40,
What is the event id that you are getting in system event viewer? Your firmware is up to date for both the drive & the library so I don’t think that reflashing it will have any effect but you can always try as I have seen that work before for some customers.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello Stonewall 40,
Have you tried to use the second port on the controller card to see if you are still getting the same event id errors. Also I would check to see which drivers that you have installed for the LSI card & make sure that you are using manufactures drivers. Here is a link to the drivers for your LSI 2032. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverid=2R4YR
If you are still getting the errors on both channels of your controller &you are using the correct drivers then I would say it could be the card that is failing.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Sam we are running Windows Server 2008 R2.
Can you give is a link to the driver for that OS? On site tech says he checked teh Dell site and says we have the latest driver (from 2009) installed already

Ok, thanks. We will update the driver first and see if that helps and get a new card on order as well.
We also have a cable and terminator being delivered today as well.

Hello Stonewall 40,
So after looking at the logs it looks like the library is fine as it never lost sync with anything while doing the test. So I would say at this point it looks like it could be your controller card that is causing the issue. If you happen to have another controller card I would swap it out & test the PV124T with the new card & see if you get the same errors with a different card.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam,the card is a single channel, only one external port and one internal.
I think we are using the same drivers because the new card we installed was the exact same part number. But will double check this.
Also, on site tech did the random moves test detached from the server. Attached is the results. [View:~/cfs-file.ashx/__key/communityserver-discussions-components-files/4466/Autoloader-random-test-unnattached-7_2D00_24_2D00_14.docx:550:0]
