Updating from 7.1.9 to 8.1.4

I have a PS6210xs and PS6000 in a group and need to upgrade both to the newest firmware before adding a new PS6210x that is at 8.1.x. The 8.1.4 release notes pdf says this (page 11):

"Using the Remote Setup Wizard (RSW) or RSWcli Utility With Dell EqualLogic Arrays
After the initial setup of a new EqualLogic array, when RAID is configured, a RAID verification process occurs. Depending on the type of array, this RAID verification could take days. The new array’s capacity is available for use during this RAID verification process.

When you update to array firmware version 8.0 or later, a restart of the array is necessary to complete the update process, but is not permitted until the RAID verification process is completed. You should account for this extra time in your infrastructure’s maintenance window."

This doesn't apply to the updates for my existing arrays that I'll update first, correct? In other words, the existing arrays will do the controller rollover just like with the 7.1.x updates so that the LUNs won't go offline, right?

Before moving to 8.1 check your SANHQ if its allready on 3.2 and if not than update SANHQ first.  After that we do the Drive FW updates before upgrading the controllers.

Some notes for 8.x

  • There is no https:// anymore and you have to use http://
  • They set a default snapshot schedule and maybe your volumes doesnt have any snapshot reserve setting. This triggers a lot of bogus errors. You have do disable this new behaviour "grp-param bla-snap-bla-default ...." on the command line

Joerg

Thanks, Donald. I was planning to put the new 6210x into it's own pool for now and possibly merge with an existing pool later, so I'm not too concerned about time for the RAID build up front. The arrays are in another building, so one of the advantages of RSW is that I won't have to walk through the 95 plus degree concrete jungle to connect the serial cable. I'd do it if you think it's a much better idea all around to use the serial cable and the CLI.

OK, thanks. Just downloading SanHQ 3.2 now.

Hmm. My EQ mgmt server is still 2008 R2, and SanHQ 3.2 isn't supported on it. Critical to get the new sanhq now? I thought 3.02 could still work with firmware 8.1.x

About the 3.2.0 not supportet on W2k8R2.  We ignore this.

Upgrade went fine and no issues. Just create a snapshot of the SANHQ VM (if its a VM).
