Unable to connect to PS4210 using Dell Storage Update Manager

Earlier I had an issue getting DSUM to connect to the array. I modified java.security as recommended at the following URL.

https://www.dell.com/community/EqualLogic/PS6000-Encrypted-Connection-Could-Not-Be-Established/td-p/7189390

The first FW in the upgrade plan installed then rebooted the array. Since then, I have been unable to connect to the array using DSUM. I was able to do the final FW update using PS Group Manager so I know my credentials are correct and the array is responding, but for some reason DSUM can't connect.

I removed the Java JRE and Java SE Dev Kit, then reinstalled the JRE. I also downloaded DSUM again, deleted the original copy and have run it from a new folder with no affect.

Any idea why I can't connect?

Connecting to either the management interface IP or the group IP.

"Connection to the server could not be established"

This is the management interface IP.This is the management interface IP.

I had the same issue, ended up just using group manager to get everything on the same firmware.

Hello, That's interesting. Not anything I've seen personally. Though I have a different process for firmware upgrades. I use a serial MUX and connect to both serial ports to monitor entire process. From both active and passive controllers. I also log the sessions. If something should go wrong it has the additional benefit of already being connected to the controllers for triage. Instead looking for find the cables, a laptop and get connected. In my 15 years whats gone wrong has been almost entirely SD card related. Leaving a CM unable to boot. Seeing that during the process made triaging that quick and simple. It's much less convenient of course compared to using DSUM or GUI. But something I have always suggested when installing storage is have the serial ports ready for connection. Regardless of storage or device, if it's got a serial port you might need it one day. Some switches BIOS can only be updated that way for example. Re: DSUM I would open a case anyways. It should work as intended. Regards, Don

My thoughts exactly which is why I opened a case. I was able to update the controller firmware using the PS Group Manager but it is limited in what it can do.

I am unfamiliar with how to do an update using serial. Just in case DSUM is irredeemably broken I did connect serial cables to the array. For now, I'll wait and see what happens with the case.

Thanks for your help.

Hello, Update by serial port is very easy. You just transfer the firmware kit to the arrays. Then at the serial port of each member, login as grpadmin and type "update" Follow the prompts. More specific instructions are included in the Firmware upgrade guide. In multimember groups do the restarts one at a time, let the member come back into the group. Then I typically wait about 2-3 mins before restarting the next member. A message is displayed on the console "member XX has joined the group" when it reconnects. Regards, Don

I’m curious what the recommended route is when you’ve got multiple enclosures in the same pool and the data is spread across them. Do you still reboot 1 at a time, should all the VMs be turned off when updating that type of pool?

Hello, Multiple member pools. Reboot them one at a time and wait until it comes back into the group. Then wait 2 -3 minutes before restarting the next member. Re: VMs. Assuming that the server and all VMs have configured the disk timeout values per Dell best practices there should be no need to shutdown the VMs or server. Doing upgrades in low IO periods is always a good idea. The "OS considerations guide" found with the firmware downloads has information on setting this value. As does the best practices guide for VMware servers. The other reason to make sure these settings are done is in the event of an unscheduled failover do to a controller failure. Being prepared for firmware upgrades also means being prepared for any controller failover event. Regards, Don

Hello,

There is a new DSUM kit available.

The Dell Storage Update Manager (DSUM)-v1.6_11 update release with secure communication related fixes is now available in the EQL Support Page.

This DSUM update release has support for the following:

  • Java secure communication related security fixes
  • Continued support for EQL Firmware maintenance releases v9.1.9 and v10.0.3
  • Continued support for Drive Firmware Update utility (DFWUPD) v13

Due to changes in Java Runtime, there is a work around in the release notes to use DSUM to get your arrays upgraded to 9.1.9 or 10.0.3.  Once at those levels the work around is no longer needed.   Once upgraded you can then do the drive firmware updates as always.

Regards,

Don
