TrueNAS on a PS6000 series

Hi,

Im looking to get a PS6000 and install freenas/truenas on it, im unsure if the device still has Dell SAN Manager on it or not.

Has anyone done it before, Is it possible? Any advice would be great before i go ahead with it.

Hello,

The manager is a JAVA based applet that is downloaded from the internal webserver of the PS6000.  Or you can use the CLI.

Make sure the array is either already factory reset, or you have verified the admin password is correct.

You will need a GbE switch, direct attachment from server to SAN is not supported.

I have not done a FreeNAS over iSCSI in years.  At that time the iSCSI initiator and MPIO support was pretty minimal.  That would be something to look into first.  Linux has a very stable and mature initiator and MPIO.  So you might want to look for a Linux based NAS solution.

Hopefully, the firmware on the SAN is not too old.  You can't upgrade it without a support contact.  I might inquire about that as well.

 Regards,

Don

Hello,

One way I have seen FreeNAS used with EQL or iSCSI storage as a VM.  With a hypervisor hosts that does well support iSCSI.  Windows Hyper-V, Linux KVM, VMware, etc..

The hypervisor takes care of the iSCSI connections and present "disks" to the FreeNAS VM.

Don
