Transfering hard drive from one PS4100 to another.

We have 2x PS4100x Equallogic arrays.  One has been decommissioned and the other is still operating. They were in 2 different groups.  In the even we have a hard drive failure in the PS4100x that is still operating, can we pull a drive from the decommissioned PS4100x to replace it without a problem? Are there any configuration steps we should follow to use the decommissioned PS4100x hard drives as spare parts for the PS4100x that is still in production?

Thanks.

Hello,

Is the production group still under a service contract?  If so, then no.

If the two arrays are identical, drive size and speed and neither are covered under contract you can swap compatible parts.  Before you swap drives the decomissioned array must be reset to remove the RAID labels on the drives.

However, often such decommissioned arrays serve better as a DR to protect most important volumes.

Don

Both units are out of warrantee and EOL. I cannot power on the decommissioned PS4100x.  Is there a way to clear the RAID labels after putting the drives in the second PS4100x?  Both PS4100x units are identical in terms of firmware, number of drives, size of drives, etc...

Hello,

Much depends on the firmware version.  If new enough, it will show up as a foreign drive, and can be cleared in the GUI or CLI.   But only install them one at a time.

GrpName> member select MEMBERNAME disk select DRIVENUMBER clear-label

  E.g.  member select PS6210E disk select 1 clear-label
