Setup issue with ps6000

I have a PS6000 I picked up for my home lab and when I try to run setup I am getting an error after 2-3 min stating:

*** Database is not functional. The setup utility has failed.
Please try again.

So afterwards I tried a diag and it is saying

/mgtdb is not mounted.

Using /pss/ for output.

Is there a fix for this? I do not see anything applicable when I search. Thank you

Hello,

First thing I would do is a reset to make sure all the drive data is wiped.  At the CLI> type  'reset'

Follow the prompt to confirm it.

Diag won't work on an unconfigured array, so that part it normal.

Where did you get the drives?  How many are there and what type?   Depending on firmware only certified Dell/EQL drives will work.  You need at least 8 of them in a PS6000 to run setup.  Only 1/2 and fully populated arrays are supported.

Hmm ok I had not heard that before, I currently have 3 non-dell drives available and only one loaded, 500GB seagate, I was going to make sure the unit was working before investing more money into it.

The FW version is 8.1.8 is that a locked FW?

Also I have ran the reset, it completes without issue and it does seem to see the drive I have in currently without any issue it just dies on the "Database is not functional" error during and aborts.

Hello razor918,

With equallogic system you need to use equallogic drives in them in order for the drives to be seen.  You can download firmware as long as the system is still under warranty.  On most equallogic systems the warranty is a max of 7years from date of original purchase.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello,

Re: 8.x firmware yes.  You will need drives specifically made for EQL arrays.  You will also need at least EIGHT (8) of them, but 16 is recommended.   It will not run setup with just one drive.

Well my drives came in today, got 4 Dell SAS drives among a few SATA WD and Seagate drives I already had and was so excited because I was able to do the setup but was only seeing like 2TB of space so I blew everything out and connected with serial when I rebooted only to learn all the Dell labeled SAS drives were not compatible... Cannot win for losing here...Thanks for the help though! You were very helpful dwilliam62!

Hello,

The drives have to be specifically for Dell/EQL not just "Dell"   For example a PowerVault Dell drive won't work.

Also you can't mix SAS and SATA in the same chassis.   You can't mix RPM speeds either.

There are vendors out there with refurbished Dell/EQL drives.  You can start with 8 then later add 8 more.  Use RAID6.  Then you will find it's a pretty amazing iSCSI device.  There are some good used GbE switches out there.

I am glad that I was able to help you.

  Take care.
