PS6210x EqualLogic -Firmware upgrade in VMWare iSCSI environment

Our environment consists of  ~500+ PS6210x EqualLogic storage devices configured with iSCSI for VMWare servers. Most of them are running 8.1.0 firmware and we are planning to upgrade to N-1 i.e. 8.1.6.

I have been informed that "there’s a possible outage that occurs and it may last between 7 and 12 seconds during upgrade. This may or may not be noticed by ESXi hosts. However, if there is SQL server and if it runs the backup at the same time when firmware is being upgraded, crash is possible"

Questions:

1. Do we need to shutdown ESX servers during the upgrade.

2. Is firmware V8.1.6 is stable or recommend to go for Firmware V9.0.3.

3. Is there a way to automate upgrades, since our environment consists of 500+ devices.

Thanks in advance...

Best Regards,

Krishna Murthy

Thanks for detailed information.

I have installed Dell Storage Update Manger (DSUM) but failed to launch due to Java error.

I have tried to modify Java security settings but no luck, enclosed error snapshot.
