Dell's response is I pay a one-time support fee of $395 to get response. That seems really unfair. All I would like to do is delete the member. It feels like Dell is holding me hostage.

Hello Netechture,
With all Equallogic systems it is best to keep an active support warranty on the system if it is still in production. For your issue you need to have an active warranty so that we can review the logs to make sure that when you delete the member all data will be moved to the other members & no data will be left on the member that is to be deleted.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello,
To add to what Sam said. The requirement was added after some customers improperly removed a member from the group.
For example, the admin did a factory reset instead of a "member delete" which has safe guards like moving data to other members of that pool before reset. A reset is just that, delete all the data and remove configuration info on THAT member alone. This resulted in them removing the member from GUI when it might have been possible to recover the member.
Another case when a switch failed as the member wasn't properly wired to both switches resulted in an offline member. The admin thought "deleting and re-adding" in the member might resolve it. It doesn't. When you remove a member it's removed from the internal databases.
So support reviews each case when a delete offline member is requested to make sure there are no options to restore the member and then remove it properly from the group.
Even a failed array might be restored long enough to properly remove it.
Depending on where the unit is located it might be possible to get a support contract up to 12 years from original ship date. After 7 years from ship date the 7+ to 12 year contract does have more limitations compared to the standard warranties.
So that one time fee would also allow a review on the health of the remaining members too.
Regards,
Don
