PS 6100 and PS 4100 undocumented errors

Hello,

We have a couple of Equal logic Sans PS 6100 and PS 4100.  Everything was going well until the battery on the controllers had gone.  One on each controller per unit.  I swapped out the batteries CR2032 and everything checks out fine.  However, it shows that there are errors and I can't find them.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Dave

Hello Dave,

Can you be a bit more specific on the error message?

That battery is for the TOD clock.  If the original error was about the cache battery that is something else entirely.

Hi Don,

The error message is this.  Critical hardware component failure.  Check the event log to determine which component has failed.

When I take a look at the event log it says ID 28.4.47 Critical health conditions exist.  Correct immediately before they affect array operation.

The battery status for both controllers is now reporting good.  Both controllers are fine. Both power supplies are fine. Everything checks out just fine.  No indication of what it is.

Hello,

OK, this one I am familiar with.  When you removed the CM and re-installed it there was a timing issue and the OS isn't properly clearing that fault condition, now that the CM is back installed.

Easiest way to resolve it, connect a serial cable to the PASSIVE controller.  Then issue a restart on the PASSIVE controller.  When it boots back up it should clear that error condition.

You can remove the passive and wait two minutes then re-install but the restart method is preferred.

 Regards,

Hi Don,

That worked for our 4100.  Kudos.

I do, however, have another issue.  On our 6100 I changed the battery on Module slot 0.  When Module slot 1 is active, it registers that the Module in slot 0 the battery is good.  As soon as the Module in slot 0 is the active controller, then it shows as failed.

Hello,

Please provide the exact error.  I am pretty sure it's not the coin cell battery that is bad but the Cache to Flash card.  Which means typically replacing the entire CM.  Unless there's a 3rd party maintainer offering just that flash card.  It's a little trick to replace and you must use anti-static gear to prevent damaging it during installation.

 Regards,

Don

Hello Zakovichdell,

What is the issue that you are having with your PS4100 as you didn’t state it in your post?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello,

The critical errors even after replacing the CR2032 batteries, are likely due to a controller or Cache-to-Flash (C2F) module issue.

The C2F module may be faulty, consider replacing the controller.

Try to restart the passive controller via serial cable or by removing/reinserting it.

@DELL-Marco B  We replaced the controller and restarted the Passive Controller via serial cable. Still the same Critical error..

Lord Melch,

Did you replace the batteries? You never stated that you did, just that you restarted the passive controller. If not then I would suggest replacing them, if you have then we might need to pull logs. You can follow this link for how to pull the logs, and you can follow this link to see how to upload the logs to your Service Request.

I will private message you the Service Request number.

@dwilliam62

I spoke to the gents initially involved.

They had an issue where the SAN wouldn't accept a disk as a spare.

They initially tried replacing the passive controller 1 (bottom).
When rebooted (via SAN S/W) the SAN didn’t come back up. It didn’t failover to the new controller and there were no comms on the ethernet ports.
So tugged and plugged controller 0 (top) and the same problem. It didn’t failover.

I replaced the active controller 0 (top). Still didn’t work. So replaced the battery in it and re-inserted into top position.
The SAN started re-initialising and it came back up the next day  The orange LED was still on solid, but operational.

Yesterday as per this thread we rebooted the passive controller (via the Serial cable) and still same problem orange LED on solid.
