Non-Equallogic Firmware SSD? Really?

I just saw many EQL boxes with non-EQL firmware SSD on eBay, I wonder if it's possible to have no-EQL firmware in the box?

As I always thought EQL box will ONLY ACCEPT disk with EQL FW .

Last time, I wrongly put 24 Compellent 1.2TB into PS6100 and none of it working.

PS6100 throws error "one or more drives in the array are not approved".
