Hard Drive firmware not available without a Dell Support Contract

We have two EqualLogic arrays, a PS6100 & a PS6210, that are no longer on Dell support contracts but they need hard drive firmware updates. Is there really no way to get hard disk firmware updates besides putting an expensive Dell Service contract on these?

Hello,

Yes, that is correct.  The firmware kits for the drive and arrays are only available on arrays under contract.

Well that really and is ridiculous in my opinion! Pay a few thousand dollars to get some hard disk firmware critical updates or live with the possibly problematic firmware. Thanks Dell!

Hello,

I am sorry that you feel that way.  It's part of the all inclusive nature of the Dell PS Series SANs.  Other companies and products use a per line item license and support structure.  So the more expensive the configuration and number of options you select the greater your license and support cost is.  Not so with the PS.  All features come enabled and as long as you maintain the contract any new features or bundled software is included.  Which is not that common in the SAN industry.

You aren't just paying for drive firmware but also the license to use the storage array firmware, future firmware/bundled upgrades  including new features, as well as the hardware/software support as well.

 Regards,

Don
