FW upgrade on one member of a group

Hello,

I have a group with two SANs in it.

  • Member 1 running 10.0.1
  • Member 2 running 10.0.2

I have migrated all of my VMs off the volumes using Member 1.  I'd like to upgrade the FW on that box to 10.0.3. I launched the Storage Update Manager but cannot figure out how to ensure that only Member 1 receives the upgrade.  I have production VMs still running on Member 2.

Update Plan Summary states:

Getting started, Preparing your group, and Preparing files
Estimated time 15 minutes
These steps provide information on estimated time taken, group changes that must be made, and files that you will need before you start the update process

PS Series FW V10.0.3 Upgrade
Estimated time 50 minutes
Your PS Series FW members will be updated to the target release. Be aware the group's connectivity may be interrupted or lost.

Review HIT Kit Information for PS Firmware V10.0.3
You will review which Host Integration Tool versions are compatible with this firmware.

I am worried that it will update the entire group.

Is there a way to ensure that only Member 1 takes the upgrade?

Thanks,

Mike

Hello,

With DSUM it's going to update the entire group.  Easiest way is do it manually it's not very difficult.

The way I do it is, transfer the KITs to both members.  Then using the serial port login as grpadmin and run update on member1.  Follow the prompts and when done, type restart to make it effective.  With the serial port cable to the other controller and wait for the login.  Once logged in I like to wait for a minute after I see the "membe1 has joined the group " message on the console.  The the two members sync up.  move your vms back and repeat the process.

Side note. If you have setup your servers and VMs to best practices and chose a lower IO time as well, doing the update live is safe.  If your severs are not ready for a planned restart, they won't be ready for an unplanned one in cause of  failure.  The OS considerations Guide help you with that.  If running VMware the best practices guide TR1091 has important info there.

If you use the EQL Groupmgr as well as the commandline you can select which member to upgrade "first". I always start that with the unit which doenst run the Groupmgr (eg. Group leader).

Keep in mind that at the end of the day all members have to run on the same FW. Mixed FW within the same group is not supportet and creates a alarm/notification.

Dont forget the FW Drive update as well. If you dont use the Update Manager you have to do it from the commandline.

  1. Upload the *.tgz with pscp or simlar
  2. Login into the member(not group) and type in "update"

Hello,

I recommend the serial port for running updates. If there is a problem with the upgrade the only connection option could be the serial port.  If you run it via the serial port you are ready and can monitor the update process more closely.

Most common failure is SD card write error which could leave one controller at the old FW level.
