Faulty Drive Carriers
Hello,
I have two PS4100's, each have multiple faulty drive carriers (latch does not stay closed). Dell has sent me replacements. I'm configured using RAID50. If I wanted to remove a disk that is online to swap out the carrier, is it possible to force the online disk to be a hot spare first? I am wondering if this would eliminate the lengthy restructuring process.
thank you

Hello,
Is there anyway you can take a maint window and shutdown the array? Then there's no need to do the rebuild at all.
Depending on firmware revision it maybe possible to mirror the drive with broken latch to the spare but that would require assistance from support to do that. It also leaves you more vulnerable since you will be using up a spare temporarily. I would suggest that you don't do that. RAID50 is two RAID5s striped together. Two faults on the same RAIDset and you are down. RAID6 would not be so vulnerable.
A short downtime would prevent that possibility.

Yes I could do an after hours maintenance shutdown. Thank you for your input, it is greatly appreciated.
