Equalogic PS4100E preventative maintenance
Our equaloic SAN is showing its age and we had a pretty scary situation last week. Our drives are set-up in RAID6 with a hot spare. 2 of the drives went bad at almost the exact same time, while we didn't have any replacements on site. So we had to allow for new drives to be shipped, installed, and wait for the array to reconstruct itself. While that was happening were worried that a 3rd drive could possibly go bad. Because of that, we want to do a complete drive replacement for all of the aging drives.
My question is, what is the best way to perform this task? Simply pull out 1 drive at a time, and allowing the array to rebuild itself fully before moving onto the next?

Hello,
Is this array still under support? If so contact Dell and they will review the health of each drive.
It's important to keep up to date on not only EQL array firmware but the drive firmware as well.

Hello,
Well w/o being able to review the health of the array and keep current firmware you have no real way of knowing if the replacement drives are really any better than what are in there now. You may want to buy some cold spares to have on hand to immediately replace any that fail.
Your method will force rebuilds over and over again.
You may want to consider getting it back under a support contract. If not, I would strongly suggest you keep verified backups at all times.

Don

It is completely unsupported. We are looking into a replacement, but decisions take a long time around here. So I want to be prepared to run with our current array for quite a while
