Equallogic PS6100 Procedure for replacing a controller

Hello,  I have an out-of-warranty PS6100 and I need to know the procedure for replacing a controller.  The controller has a bad battery and we have ordered and received a replacement.  I just need to know the process of sticking it in it.  :)

The controller with the bad battery is the secondary non-active controller right now.

Do I need to backup settings from the old controller or will the settings auto populate when I plug it in.  Will I first have to update the firmware.

I am looking for instruction to take me from pre-removal of old controller to the the new controller being online.

I have the same thing but faulty controller remained primary.
How to make it secondary?

Thank you

Hello,

Just an FYI, it's always best to start a new topic vs. using a very old one.

Well first thing to look at, is in the GUI, are both active and passive controller showing Green?

Or at the CLI you can run:

GrpName>member select MEMBERNAME show controllers.

In this example below the array MEMBERNAME is PS6210E.   If you are not sure what your member name is you can run:

 GrpName>show member

Name Status Version Disks Capacity FreeSpace Connections
---------- ------- ---------- ----- ---------- ---------- -----------
PS6210E online V10.0.1 (R 24 33.74TB 32.93TB 162
457114)

GrpName> member select PS6210E show controllers

Once you are use both are OK, then you can issue a restart at the CLI.  This will cause the Primary to swap with the passive.

It is best to do this during a low IO period to keep the failover time as short as possible.

What is the problem with the Active Controller.

Once you remove the bad controller, don't forget to swap the compact flash card from the old one to the replacement.

Don

Thank you for your reply.
In the graphical interface, I can see my two controllers. The primary has a default battery problem. I would like to change the controller.
For that, I have to switch from primary.
How to do ? Can I just press the little 'StanbBy on / off' button?

thank's

Hello,

No.  That would only shutdown the array and when powered back up would likely be back on the same controller.

In the GUI, go to Members.

Expand it and select the Member name you want to restart.

On the right hand pane, select "Maintenance"

You will see a button labeled  "Restart"

That will restart the array member and fail it over to the other controller.

  Regards,

Don

OK, thanks.

but by doing that, I rebase only the controller. Users should not be affected.

Hello,

If you mean, when you remove the failed passive controller users won't be affected that is correct.

The restart will force all servers to reconnect but users should not be impacted.

Don

Hello Santhosh ,

That is correct.  You want to make the secondary active before removing the primary.  Doing this is a low IO period is best to minimize the failover time.

You can do the restart at the CLI or via the GUI.

 Regards,

Don

Don,

one more thing.. all we used the storage from this EquaLogic is allocated to vSphere and they created VM's.. so in this case anything will RESTART have impact?

Thanks ..
