Equallogic PS4XXX extension vs compatibility of Dell EqualLogic Host Connection Manager v1.3.0

Hi,

We have an EqualLogic SAN Group composed of two PS4XXX series, DELL documentation says that it is not possible to extend to more than two PS4XXX but it is possible to extend storage with  PS6XXX  series however PS6XXX are no longer commercialized  !

After looking on diffrent models, SC series seems to be quite compatible, some features are not compatible like extending PS storage pool with SC disks  !

So before going further with the SC, we need to know if we attach an SC3000 to the PS SAN Group can it be compatible ?

Can the shared LUNs from SC storage pool be compatible with the DELL Equallogic Host Connection Manager v1.3.0 software installed on the targets ?

Thanks !

Hello Danny,

You cannot directly attach an SC array to a PS array.   They do not connect to each other other than for replication.  You would need to have your PS arrays at 10.0.3 or greater to properly support replication between SC and PS storage.

However, you CAN connect your Linux servers to both storage arrays at the same time.  The HIT/LE software only supports EQL LUNs.  All other vendors will be ignored by that software.

In theory you COULD use LUNs from both SANs and combine them at the host level. I.e. with LVM or software RAID. But I would strongly advise against that. The PS4xxx are likely out-of -warranty (OOW) and it would complicate SC triage if you have covered and OOW arrays combined.

However you can then copy the data from one SAN to another.  In some virtualized environments you can also migrate VMs (aka VMware vMotion) from one SAN to the other live..

 Regards,

Don
