EqualLogic PS4210 Series Raid 50 to Raid 6

Hi,

I have a EqualLogic PS4210 SAN and would like to convert a volume from RAID 50 to RAID 6.

I know this can be done in production.    Currently have 9tb that is 98 percent filled with Raid 50.

My question is, can this volume still be written to while the RAID conversion is in progress?

Hello,

You can't convert a "volume" to RAID6.   That entire physical array has one RAID type.  So any and all volumes on that member will be based on a RAID6 RAIDset.  You can set a RAID preference for a volume, but that requires another member at that RAID level.  So, yes you can do I/O while the conversion is in progress.  There could be a performance impact depending on the load on the array.  New IO requests have priority over the RAID conversion.

 Regards,

Don
