Equallogic PS-M4110X Options for HA / Mirroring of volumes.
We have a M1000e Chassis with 2 Equallogic PS-M4110X, but we had a failure with one of this units, and the availability of the volumes was compromised.
It was configured with 2 pool members with RAID6 Policy, but after changing the operation to the DR Site, we are considering the reconfiguration of this layout.
In the new layout we are interested in something like mirroring the volumes between both PS-M4110X units, and in the case that one unit get damaged, it could continue operating all volumes with the remaining unit.
Does it is posible..? or the only HA options is for accessing the controllers.
Regards,
Dionisio

Hello,
What version of EQL firmware are you using? Since the units are in the same group and in different pools, with proper firmware you can mirror volumes. It's known as synchronous replication. You can not mirror them all, and there is no auto-failover to the alternate pool. But your data is safe and at worst a rescan or restart of the host is needed to restore access to the data.
If you do configure volumes for sync rep, they cannot also do remote group replication. They also can't be a target of replication from another group.

Don

@DELL-Josh Cr
SyncRep was not there from the beginning. Maybe the reason why its not mentioned in a 1.0 manual
@dquintero507
we use (Async) Replication from the very first beginning. But one of the requirements are 2 different EQL Groups with at least one Member each.
Later we switch to SyncReplication which needs that the members are in the same Group but in different Pools. It give us transparent Failover for our vSphere Clusters. But there is no automatic failover.
Yes the PS-M4110 is special but i cant see a reason why it shouldnt work. I assume that you update your Firmware over the years. Dell does not allowed downloading or use of the FW without a valid support contract.
I have a customer which use SyncRep with 2 PS-4110X.
Keep in mind that SyncRep can help against hardware failures.... and not file system related ones or when a user deletes data. To solve that you need SyncRep + Snapshots or just use normal Replication.

Hi Dionisio,
I do not see a way of setting this device to have shared volumes. https://dell.to/32aTKgP and https://dell.to/3iGQ77T have more info.

Thanks all for the advice, I see syncrep is available in our box, and seems to be what we were looking for... we will make some test with this feature..

Hello,
You are welcome. Hopefully you have kept up to date on firmware. As fixes over the years have included updates for replication.
A couple of note. SyncRep configured volumes may see increased latency depending on load. As the write is not acknowledged until it is stored in the alternate pool.
If you configure a volume for SyncRep you cannot also do Async Replication on that same volume. Same for an Async Rep configuration volume can not also do SyncRep. So backups are very important.

Don
